Atletico Madrid vs Juventus Preview, Tips and Odds

Atletico Madrid and Juventus will lock horns on Wednesday in a 1st leg of their 1/8 final tie in the Champions League. Atleti will be extra motivated as their Wanda Metropolitano Stadium will be the venue of the final in this year’s edition. The teams met in the group stages in 2014, but the games will be remembered more for the battles on the field than some spectacular plays. Juventus brough Cristiano Ronaldo to Italy with the main idea of him delivering the coveted trophy back to Turin, for the first time since 1997. Atletico is the only team to reach three finals without a single triumph, while Juve are the team to lose the most finals in the competition – seven.

Last game at this venue: 01.10.2014 Atletico Madrid – Juventus 1:0; Arda Turan 75’

Worth mentioning: The teams were drawn in the same group in the 14/15 season. Just one goal were scored in both games, but it was enough for Atletico to record a win and a draw against their Italian counterparts. Juventus reached the final later that season only to lose to Barcelona. The two teams might be considered the unlucky ones this decade, as each have lost two finals, with Real Madrid winning twice against Atleti and once against the “Old Lady” from Turin. Some of the players might have changed, but the coaches are still the same, as Diego Simeone and Max Alegri are still pulling the strings from the dugouts. Their football philosophies are based on strong defense and less creativity upfront and their teams are extermely tough to break.

Worth mentioning: Atletico got back on winning ways in the weekend after recording a narrow 1:0 victory in the Madrid derby with Rayo Vallecano, having previously recorded two back-to-back defeats at the hands of Betis and Real Madrid. After the “mini-crisis” that saw Juve concede three goals in consecutive games, the Old Lady recorded two “classic” 3:0 victories, making it six games in a row with over 2,5 goals scored. Atleti managed to keep three clean sheets in their last five home games, but they conceded three goals in each of the other two matches.
