Champions League quarter-finals do not all arrive with the same historical weight. Some are almost fresh matchups in European knockout football, while others return with decades of baggage, repeat meetings and long records of one side trying to solve the other.
Sportingpedia looked at the knockout-only UEFA record behind this season’s four quarter-final pairings, tracking previous ties, match results, goals, progression history and the most recent two-legged meeting for each matchup. The sharpest divide appears immediately: Real Madrid and Bayern Munich have already faced each other in 13 UEFA knockout ties, while the other three quarter-finals together account for only four.
That split becomes even clearer when the rest of the bracket is unpacked. PSG and Liverpool are still level on knockout-match wins and goals, Atletico Madrid have eliminated Barcelona in both of their previous Champions League knockout ties, and Sporting remain unbeaten in knockout matches against Arsenal after progressing from the clubs’ only two-legged tie.

Real Madrid vs Bayern Is the Quarter-Final That Towers Over the Rest
No other tie in this round comes close to Real Madrid vs Bayern Munich for scale. Their 13 previous UEFA knockout ties have produced 26 matches and 76 goals, which means this one pairing alone brings more knockout history than the other three quarter-finals combined. Real Madrid also hold the stronger overall record, with 13 knockout-match wins to Bayern’s 9, a 42-34 goal edge and an 8-5 lead on progressions.
The latest chapter adds even more weight to this season’s meeting. The clubs last met in the 2023/24 Champions League semi-finals, when Bayern hosted the first leg and drew 2-2 before losing 2-1 in Madrid, sending Real through 4-3 on aggregate. That matters now because Madrid host the first leg again on 7 April, and no other first-leg host in this year’s quarter-finals has previously progressed against its current opponent as many times as Real have against Bayern.

PSG vs Liverpool Is the One Tie With Almost No Daylight in It
Where Real Madrid and Bayern bring volume, PSG and Liverpool bring balance. Their only previous knockout tie came in the 2024/25 round of 16, and it finished level on both match wins and aggregate goals. Liverpool won 1-0 in Paris in the first leg, PSG won 1-0 at Anfield in the second, and the French side eventually progressed on penalties after a 1-1 aggregate draw.
That leaves this quarter-final with the cleanest statistical deadlock in the bracket. The clubs are level at one knockout-match win each and 1-1 on goals, yet PSG still own the decisive edge because they are the side that survived the tie. With Paris also hosting first this season, they arrive as one of only two first-leg hosts in the quarter-finals who have already eliminated their current opponent the only time the clubs met over two legs.

Barcelona and Arsenal Are Both Trying to Reverse an Old Problem
Barcelona do not come into this quarter-final with much historical comfort. Their only two previous Champions League knockout ties against Atletico Madrid both ended in elimination. In 2013/14, Barcelona drew 1-1 at home in the first leg and then lost 1-0 in Madrid to go out 2-1 on aggregate. In 2015/16, they again hosted first, won 2-1, and still fell after a 2-0 defeat in the return sent Atletico through 3-2 overall.
That makes Atletico the only team in this bracket with a perfect progression record across more than one previous tie against their current opponent. It also leaves Barcelona with the weakest historical position of any first-leg host this season: they are 0-2 on progressions against Atletico despite opening both previous ties at home, just as they do again on 8 April.

Sporting vs Arsenal is shorter on history, but it still leans one way. Their only previous knockout tie came in the 2022/23 Europa League round of 16, when Sporting drew 2-2 at home in the first leg and then 1-1 away before advancing on penalties after a 3-3 aggregate finish. That leaves Sporting unbeaten in knockout matches against Arsenal and gives them the progression edge heading into another tie that starts in Lisbon.
