Transfer fees for elite defenders have risen dramatically over the past decade, with centre-backs and full-backs increasingly commanding sums once associated almost exclusively with attacking players. Europe’s biggest clubs have repeatedly been willing to spend more than €60 million to strengthen their back lines, and English teams have been particularly prominent in driving those prices higher.
The all-time ranking has continued to change in recent seasons. Four defender transfers from the 2026/27 campaign already feature among the 20 highest fees ever paid for players in the position, while several deals completed years earlier remain firmly near the top.
Sportingpedia analysed the 20 highest transfer fees ever paid for defenders, looking at the amounts involved, the buying and selling clubs, the players’ nationalities and the seasons in which the moves took place.
Josko Gvardiol’s €90 million move to Manchester City remains the highest transfer fee ever paid for a defender, while the wider ranking reveals an overwhelming Premier League presence: English clubs account for 14 of the 20 deals, with Manchester City alone responsible for five. That dominance is accompanied by a clear pattern in the nationality breakdown, where French players lead with five entries, followed by Dutch defenders with four, while Portuguese and Spanish players appear three times each. Among them, Matthijs de Ligt is the only player to feature twice, generating €152.5 million across his moves to Juventus and Bayern Munich. At the same time, despite another summer of huge transfer spending, none of the four defender deals from 2026/27 has broken into the all-time top 10, with Jeremy Jacquet the only one to reach the top 15. Taken together, the 20 transfers are worth €1.403 billion.
The Most Expensive Defenders in Football History

Gvardiol Holds the Record at €90 Million
Manchester City set the current record when they paid €90 million for Josko Gvardiol in 2023/24. The Croatian remains narrowly ahead of Harry Maguire, whose €87 million move from Leicester to Manchester United in 2019/20 had previously set the benchmark. Matthijs de Ligt sits third after Juventus paid Ajax €85.5 million for him in the same season, while Virgil van Dijk’s €84.65 million move from Southampton to Liverpool and Wesley Fofana’s €80.4 million transfer from Leicester to Chelsea complete the top five.
Only six defender transfers in football history have reached at least €80 million, with Lucas Hernández completing that group after Bayern Munich paid Atletico Madrid exactly €80 million for the French defender. The gap between the record and the lower end of the all-time top 20 is relatively small considering the size of the fees involved: Ezri Konsa ranks 20th at €59.6 million, meaning a defender now needs to command close to €60 million to enter the 20 most expensive transfers ever recorded for the position.
Premier League Clubs Account for 14 of the Top 20 Transfers
Premier League clubs dominate the buying side of the ranking, accounting for 14 of the 20 highest transfer fees ever paid for defenders. Manchester City alone are responsible for five of them: Gvardiol for €90 million, Rúben Dias for €71.6 million, João Cancelo and Aymeric Laporte for €65 million each, and Matheus Nunes for €62 million. Together, those five transfers amount to €353.6 million.
Chelsea feature three times, having signed Wesley Fofana for €80.4 million, Marc Cucurella for €65.3 million and Maxence Lacroix for €60.7 million, while Manchester United and Liverpool each appear twice. The remaining six transfers were completed by clubs in Germany, France, Italy and Spain, with Bayern Munich accounting for both Bundesliga deals and Paris Saint-Germain for both Ligue 1 transfers. Juventus and Real Madrid are the only Serie A and La Liga clubs respectively to feature among the 20.
Four Clubs Have Sold Multiple Defenders for Huge Fees
The selling side reveals a different pattern, with Leicester, Juventus, Bournemouth and Brighton each having sold two defenders whose transfers rank among the 20 most expensive ever for the position. Their repeated presence shows how a small group of clubs have managed to develop or establish multiple high-value defenders before selling them for enormous fees.
Leicester sold Harry Maguire to Manchester United for €87 million and Wesley Fofana to Chelsea for €80.4 million, collecting €167.4 million from the two transfers. Juventus received €65 million from Manchester City for João Cancelo and €67 million from Bayern Munich for Matthijs de Ligt, while Bournemouth sold Ilya Zabarnyi to Paris Saint-Germain for €63 million and Dean Huijsen to Real Madrid for €62.5 million. Brighton also feature twice through Marc Cucurella’s €65.3 million move to Chelsea and Jan Paul van Hecke’s €60 million transfer to Tottenham.
Leicester’s presence in this group is especially striking in hindsight. Despite collecting huge sums for two star defenders, what followed was a dramatic sporting collapse: after returning briefly to the Premier League, the Foxes suffered back-to-back relegations and are now in League One, England’s third tier. The fall is extraordinary for a club that won the Premier League in 2016 and the FA Cup in 2021, underlining how quickly the fortunes of one of English football’s great modern success stories unravelled.
De Ligt Is the Only Defender to Feature Twice
Matthijs de Ligt is the only player to appear twice among the 20 highest transfer fees ever paid for defenders. Juventus paid Ajax €85.5 million for the Dutch centre-back in 2019/20, the third-highest fee ever paid for a defender, before Bayern Munich paid Juventus another €67 million for him three seasons later. His second move ranks ninth, taking the combined value of the two transfers to €152.5 million.
The Netherlands consequently account for four of the 20 transfers through De Ligt’s two moves, Virgil van Dijk and Jan Paul van Hecke. France is the most represented nationality with five entries – Wesley Fofana, Lucas Hernández, Jeremy Jacquet, Leny Yoro and Maxence Lacroix – while Spanish and Portuguese defenders account for three each.
No Summer Transfer Has Broken Into the All-Time Top 10
Four defender transfers completed in 2026/27 already rank among the 20 most expensive in football history, but none has entered the top 10. Liverpool’s €63.6 million signing of Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes ranks 13th, making him the only defender transferred this season to reach the all-time top 15. Maxence Lacroix follows in 18th place at €60.7 million, while Jan Paul van Hecke and Ezri Konsa occupy 19th and 20th with fees of €60 million and €59.6 million respectively.
That contrasts sharply with the biggest spending elsewhere in the 2026/27 transfer market. The ten most expensive transfers of the summer were all midfielders or attacking players, led by Enzo Fernández at €145 million, Morgan Rogers at €138 million and Elliot Anderson at €135 million. Bradley Barcola and Yan Diomande both moved for €125 million, while several central midfielders also commanded fees approaching or exceeding €100 million. No defender featured among the ten biggest transfers of the window.
The difference is substantial. Jacquet’s €63.6 million fee is less than half the amount paid for each of the three most expensive transfers of the summer, showing that although four defenders have entered the all-time top 20 this season, clubs have directed their very biggest investments towards midfield and attack.
