The latest weekend of European football brought an abrupt end to two of the season’s most impressive starts. Manchester City suffered their first Premier League defeat after opening the campaign with seven consecutive victories, losing 2-1 at Aston Villa, while Barcelona’s nine-match winning start in La Liga ended with a 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid in El Clásico.

Barcelona had even more at stake. Their nine straight victories had equalled the all-time La Liga record set by Real Madrid in 1968/69, leaving them one win away from becoming the first club to begin a Spanish top-flight season with 10 consecutive victories. Instead, the very club whose record they had matched stopped them from breaking it.

Sportingpedia analysed the clubs still unbeaten across the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga, Ligue 1, Eredivisie and Liga Portugal in the 2026/27 season, looking not only at how long each has avoided defeat but also how many of those matches they have won.

Only eight teams remain unbeaten. Serie A supplies half of them – Inter, Lazio, Roma and AC Milan – while Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund remain undefeated in Germany. Feyenoord have survived the longest, reaching 10 Eredivisie matches without defeat, but Porto have produced the strongest start of all: nine matches, nine victories and the only perfect domestic league record still standing across the seven competitions.

Key Takeaways:

  • Only eight clubs remain unbeaten across Europe’s top seven domestic leagues
  • Feyenoord have gone the longest without losing, remaining unbeaten through their first 10 Eredivisie matches with seven wins and three draws
  • Porto are the only club with a perfect record, winning all nine of their Liga Portugal matches
  • Serie A has four unbeaten teams after eight rounds – Inter, Lazio, Roma and AC Milan – something that has never happened before in the competition
  • Inter and Lazio have both won seven of their eight matches, while Roma and Milan have five victories and three draws
  • Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund are both unbeaten after seven Bundesliga matches, with identical records of five wins and two draws
  • Barcelona’s nine consecutive victories equalled the all-time La Liga record for the best start to a season, but Real Madrid stopped them from reaching a record-breaking tenth
  • Manchester City’s seven-match winning start also ended this weekend, leaving the Premier League without an unbeaten team

The Eight Teams Yet to Lose in Europe’s Top Seven Leagues

The only teams yet to lose in Europe’s top 7 leagues: Matches unbeaten and number of wins

Feyenoord have played more league matches without defeat than anyone else, reaching 10 unbeaten games after their 1-1 draw away to PSV. Their record stands at seven wins and three draws, meaning their position at the top of this comparison comes from consistency rather than a perfect winning run.

Porto sit immediately behind them in terms of matches unbeaten, but their record is more striking: nine matches and nine victories. No other club across the seven leagues has taken every available domestic league point so far this season.

Serie A contributes half of the entire group. Inter and Lazio have each won seven and drawn one of their first eight matches, while Roma and AC Milan both stand at five wins and three draws. Germany provides the final two teams, with Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund both sitting on five victories and two draws after seven Bundesliga rounds.

By contrast, the Premier League, La Liga and Ligue 1 no longer have a single unbeaten club. Manchester City had been the last remaining Premier League side without a defeat before losing at Aston Villa, while Barcelona’s El Clásico loss removed the final unbeaten record in Spain. Ligue 1 had already lost all of its unbeaten teams earlier in the campaign.

Serie A Makes History With Four Unbeaten Teams

The concentration of unbeaten clubs in Italy is unprecedented. For the first time in Serie A history, four teams have reached the end of the eighth round without losing a match, with Inter, Lazio, Roma and Milan all still protecting unbeaten starts.

Inter and Lazio have set the pace with seven victories apiece and only one draw, giving both an outstanding 22 points from a possible 24. Roma and Milan have taken a different route, each winning five and drawing three, but the result is still an unusual four-team cluster that has survived almost a quarter of the early league schedule without a defeat.

The contrast with the other major leagues is considerable. Germany still has two unbeaten teams, the Netherlands one and Portugal two, while England, Spain and France have none. Serie A therefore accounts for four of the eight clubs still unbeaten across the seven leagues.

Porto Stand Alone After Barcelona and Manchester City Lose Their Perfect Starts

Porto’s position became even more remarkable over the weekend because two of the other outstanding winning starts came to an end. Manchester City travelled to Aston Villa having won all seven of their Premier League matches, but a 2-1 defeat ended their perfect record as they chased an eighth consecutive victory.

A day later, Barcelona suffered the same fate on an even more historic scale. Hansi Flick’s side had won their opening nine La Liga matches, equalling Real Madrid’s record from 1968/69, and entered El Clásico with the chance to become the first team ever to win their first 10 matches of a Spanish top-flight season. Real Madrid instead won 2-1 and ensured that the 58-year-old record remained intact.

That leaves Porto alone. Their nine victories now represent the longest active winning streak from the start of the season across Europe’s top seven leagues. Barcelona have also reached nine consecutive domestic league victories in 2026/27, but their run is over, while Manchester City stopped at seven.

The distinction between Barcelona and Porto is particularly useful. Barcelona still share the longest winning start achieved anywhere among the seven leagues this season, but Porto are the only club that can still extend it.

Feyenoord Have Gone the Longest Without Losing

Porto lead on consecutive victories, but Feyenoord lead on overall survival. Their 1-1 draw at PSV extended their unbeaten Eredivisie start to 10 matches, one more than Porto have played and two more than any of the four unbeaten Serie A teams.

The difference illustrates why unbeaten runs and winning streaks tell different stories. Feyenoord have won seven and drawn three, so their 10-match unbeaten sequence is longer than Porto’s, but Porto’s nine victories from nine represent the stronger start in terms of points. Inter and Lazio sit between the two profiles, remaining unbeaten after eight matches while winning seven of them.

That makes the early 2026/27 season unusually varied at the top. Feyenoord have protected the longest unbeaten record, Porto remain flawless, Serie A has produced an unprecedented four-team unbeaten group, while Barcelona and Manchester City have already seen outstanding winning starts brought to an end.
