Two of European football’s biggest fixtures arrive within five days this week, with Barcelona at the centre of both. On Tuesday, the free-scoring Catalans, who have won all 11 competitive matches this season and scored 48 goals, travel to face back-to-back European champions Paris Saint-Germain. PSG became only the second club in the Champions League era to successfully defend the trophy, following Real Madrid, who won three consecutive titles between 2016 and 2018. Then on Sunday, Barcelona host José Mourinho’s Real Madrid in El Clásico, bringing together two clubs whose starting line-ups have repeatedly produced some of the most valuable matches football has ever seen.
Sportingpedia analysed every football match in which the combined market value of the two starting XIs reached €1.5 billion or more, based on the displayed match values. The ranking uses the combined value of the 22 players who started each game, rather than the value of the clubs’ entire squads, showing how much player value was actually on the pitch at kick-off. The timing puts this week’s PSG – Barcelona and Barcelona – Real Madrid fixtures into particularly relevant context, with all three clubs already heavily represented among football’s highest-value starting line-ups.
The current record was set only days ago. Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain fielded starting XIs worth a combined €1.838 billion on 14 October 2026, making their Champions League meeting the most valuable football match ever by combined starting-XI value. Real Madrid against Barcelona follows at €1.761 billion, while Liverpool against Real Madrid completes the top three at €1.681 billion.
The Most Valueable Football Matches in History

Manchester City – PSG pushes the record beyond €1.8 billion
The most valuable starting XIs ever to share a football pitch did so on 14 October 2026, when Manchester City faced Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League. City’s starting eleven was valued at €1.02bn, while PSG’s was worth €818m, producing a combined value of €1.838bn.
No other football match has reached €1.8bn in combined starting-XI value. The gap to second place is €77m, with Real Madrid and Barcelona combining for €1.761bn in their La Liga meeting on 26 October 2025. Liverpool’s €686m starting XI and Real Madrid’s €995m line-up produced the third-highest total ever, €1.681bn, in their Champions League encounter in November 2025.
The figures also underline how quickly the ceiling has moved. The only match to reach the €1.5bn level before 2024 was Liverpool against Manchester City in November 2019, when the two starting XIs were worth €1.531bn. That figure was extraordinary at the time, yet it now sits only 17th among the 19 matches to have crossed the threshold.
El Clásico already owns five places among football’s most valuable matches
Sunday’s Barcelona–Real Madrid meeting comes with a particularly strong historical context. The free-scoring Barcelona side will face José Mourinho’s Real Madrid in a fixture that already appears five times among the 19 football matches ever to reach €1.5bn in combined starting-XI value, more often than any other individual match-up.
The highest-valued edition came in October 2025, when Real Madrid’s starting XI was worth €995m and Barcelona’s €766m, combining for €1.761bn. Their January 2025 Spanish Supercopa meeting ranks fourth overall at €1.671bn, while another Supercopa encounter in January 2026 reached €1.617bn.
Two further La Liga Clásicos also make the list, at €1.548bn and €1.50bn. The repeated appearances show that the rivalry has not only brought together two of football’s biggest clubs, but repeatedly placed some of the game’s most valuable players on the same pitch.
Sunday’s match could add another entry, but its place can only be determined once the official starting XIs are known.
PSG–Barcelona arrives with another potential high-value line-up
Tuesday’s Champions League meeting brings together back-to-back European champions PSG and a Barcelona side that has won all 11 competitive matches this season while scoring 48 goals. Although PSG–Barcelona has not yet produced a match reaching the €1.5bn starting-XI threshold, both clubs are already heavily represented individually among football’s most valuable fixtures.
PSG feature five times, including the record €1.838bn meeting with Manchester City, a €1.606bn Club World Cup match against Real Madrid and Champions League fixtures against Liverpool, Bayern Munich and Arsenal. Barcelona also appear five times, all against Real Madrid.
That makes Tuesday’s fixture particularly interesting from a valuation perspective. Its place among football’s most valuable matches can only be established after the official line-ups are confirmed, because the measure depends specifically on the players selected in the starting XIs, not the clubs’ full squad values.
Real Madrid appear in almost two-thirds of the €1.5bn matches
No club comes close to Real Madrid’s presence. The Spanish club feature in 12 of the 19 football matches ever to reach the €1.5bn mark, or 63% of the total, facing Barcelona five times, Manchester City three times, Arsenal twice and Liverpool and PSG once each. Manchester City are second with seven appearances. PSG and Barcelona follow with five each, while Liverpool and Arsenal feature four times apiece. Bayern Munich appear once.
That leaves just seven different clubs represented across all 19 matches, showing how concentrated football’s highest starting-XI values are among a small group of elite teams.
Real Madrid’s presence is not limited to one competition either. Their entries span the Champions League, La Liga, the Supercopa and the Club World Cup, while the repeated Manchester City and Barcelona meetings account for eight of their 12 appearances.
The Champions League produces more than half of the €1.5bn matches
The Champions League accounts for 10 of the 19 football matches to reach the €1.5bn starting-XI mark, making it comfortably the dominant competition. La Liga and the Premier League contribute three each, the Spanish Supercopa two and the Club World Cup one.
That concentration is unsurprising given the competition’s ability to bring together elite clubs from different domestic leagues, but domestic fixtures still occupy some prominent positions. El Clásico provides the second-most valuable match ever, while Manchester City – Arsenal and two Liverpool – Manchester City meetings also make the list.
The Club World Cup has produced one such match: PSG against Real Madrid in July 2025, when the two starting line-ups were worth a combined €1.606bn, the tenth-highest total ever.
Football’s highest-value matches are increasingly recent
Perhaps the clearest broader pattern is how heavily these matches are concentrated in the last few seasons. Eighteen of the 19 matches to reach €1.5bn took place from March 2024 onwards, with the November 2019 Liverpool – Manchester City meeting the sole older exception. Even within that short period, the top end has continued moving higher. The threshold itself sits at €1.5bn, while the record has now climbed to €1.838bn.
