Roma win 0:1 at San Siro to end Milan’s seven game winning streak

Roma recorded a slender 0:1 victory against Milan last night in the 1st leg of the teams’ quarter-final clash in Europa League. Gianluca Mancini scored the only goal of the match with a header in the 17th minute after an assist from Paulo Dybala. Prior to that victory, Daniele De Rossi’s side had gone winless in 9 straight meetings with the Rossoneri, with their previous triumph against Milan achieved way back in October of 2019.

Milan were superior for much of the game, but failed to capitalize on their scoring opportunities. Stefano Pioli’s players finished the match with 25 attampts on goal compared to Roma’s 10, had 9 corner kicks – six more than their opponent and also had more ball possesion. Milan’s best chance came in the 88th minute after a nice run on the right by Samuel Chukwueze, who entered the penalty box and passed to Olivier Giroud only for his shot to hit the bar.

Now the teams’ focus switches to Serie A, where Roma are involved in a battle with Bologna and Atalanta for the last Champions League spot. They currently sit in 5th position, three points behind Bologna and five ahead of Atalanta who are with a game in hand. The Rossoneri on the other hand are 2nd, without a realistic chance for the title, trailing Inter by 14 points.
