Atalanta push for Stefano Pioli as Gasperini nears Roma move

    Key Takeaways:

  • Atalanta have intensified efforts to appoint Stefano Pioli as head coach
  • Gian Piero Gasperini is expected to take over at Roma after his contract ends
  • Roma are rushing negotiations to avoid losing Gasperini to other clubs

Atalanta’s management has significantly stepped up its efforts to appoint Stefano Pioli as the club’s new head coach, reports Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano. This move comes after it became almost certain in recent days that current manager Gian Piero Gasperini will head to Roma once his contract expires in a few days. Pioli has been chosen as the replacement for the outgoing coach. He was in charge of Milan until last summer, when he left the team. He worked with the Rossoneri for five years and managed to win the Serie A title once.

Under his leadership, the Milan giants played 240 matches and averaged 1.88 points per game. The coach has also led Lazio, Bologna, Inter, and Fiorentina, and is currently in charge of Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr. The Saudi team finished only third in the just-concluded campaign and is reportedly ready to release him if talks go positively.

Meanwhile, Roma are doing everything possible to finalise negotiations with Gian Piero Gasperini as soon as possible. The 67-year-old specialist has already made the decision to leave Atalanta, but is expected to announce it to the club’s board in Bergamo today.

Roma are in a hurry because they fear that Gasperini could receive other offers. It is believed that he would be of interest to Juventus, should Antonio Conte refuse their approach and remain with Napoli.
