Vitinha celebrates after scoring in Atletico Madrid's net during the Club World Cup

    Key Takeaways:

  • Paris Saint-Germain thrashed Atletico Madrid 4–0 in their Club World Cup debut
  • Atletico finished with ten men after Clement Lenglet’s red card in the 78th minute
  • PSG displayed clear dominance, avenging their November Champions League defeat

Paris Saint-Germain crushed Atletico Madrid 4–0 in their debut match at the Club World Cup. The goals for the French side were scored by Fabian Ruiz in the 19th minute, Vitinha in the 45th, and substitutes Senny Mayulu and Kang-In Lee late in the game. The clash at the Rose Bowl in Los Angeles was dominated almost entirely by the Champions League winners, while Atletico failed to capitalise on their few chances in front of Gianluigi Donnarumma’s goal.

The first all-European showdown of the tournament carried serious intrigue, but PSG demonstrated they are currently well ahead of their opponents. Atletico will certainly have complaints about some of the decisions made by referee Istvan Kovacs. The Madrid side finished the match with ten men after Clement Lenglet was sent off in the 78th minute.

The two teams had met in the Champions League group stage last November, when Atletico pulled off a dramatic 2–1 win at Parc des Princes. Angel Correa was the hero for Diego Simeone’s side, scoring the decisive goal in stoppage time.

Atletico have previously triumphed in the predecessor to the Club World Cup – the Intercontinental Cup. In 1974, European champions Bayern Munich declined to face South American champions Independiente, and Atletico stepped in and won 2–1.

In their next Group B match, PSG will face Botafogo, while Atletico will be looking for a must-win result against Seattle Sounders.
