The trade can be officially completed on July 6, when the NBA officially enters the new season. The deal sends Durant to one of the three teams believed to be among his preferred destinations. The other two were the San Antonio Spurs and Miami Heat.
The acquisition of Durant, who will begin the new season at 37 years old, gives the Rockets hope of becoming true title contenders in the near future. The two-time NBA champion joins a 2024/25 Houston squad that recorded 52 regular-season wins and includes Turkish center Alperen Sengun, veteran guard Fred VanVleet, and rising star Amen Thompson.
The news of Durant’s transfer comes just days after the announcement that Houston reached an agreement with head coach Ime Udoka for a contract extension.
KD averaged 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.2 assists in 62 games during the 2024/25 NBA regular season. He still has one year left on his contract, worth $54.7 million.
