    Key Takeaways:

  • Jrue Holiday heads to Portland after two seasons in Boston
  • Celtics receive Anfernee Simons and two second-round picks in return
  • Holiday is a two-time NBA champion, with Milwaukee in 2021 and Boston in 2024

The 2024 NBA champions Boston Celtics completed a trade with the Portland Trail Blazers, sending experienced guard Jrue Holiday to the Western Conference team, reported ESPN’s Shams Charania. In exchange, the Celtics acquired guard Anfernee Simons and two second-round picks in the NBA Draft.

Boston’s motives for the trade are not solely based on basketball performance, but also financial strategy, as the deal is expected to provide the Celtics with greater salary flexibility moving forward.

Holiday, a two-time NBA champion, having won titles with the Milwaukee Bucks in 2021 and with the Celtics in 2024, showed signs of decline during the last season. The 35-year-old veteran recorded averages of 11.1 points, 4.3 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 1.1 steals per game in the 2024/25 campaign.

He spent the past two years in Boston, playing a key role in the team’s championship run. Holiday’s contract runs for another three years, with the third year being a player option.

Anfernee Simons, aged 26, heads to Boston after spending all seven of his NBA seasons with Portland. His current contract is set to expire at the end of the 2025/26 season.
