  • Botafogo dismissed Renato Paiva following Club World Cup elimination
  • Paiva was informed of the decision on Sunday after the Palmeiras loss
  • The team remains in Copa Libertadores and sits 8th in the Brazilian league

The Brazilian champions and Copa Libertadores winners Botafogo announced the dismissal of their Portuguese head coach Renato Paiva after the team’s elimination by Palmeiras at the FIFA Club World Cup.

“Botafogo announces that Renato Paiva is no longer the head coach of the first team,” the Rio de Janeiro club wrote in a post on social media platform X. The club is owned by American businessman John Textor and specified that Paiva had been informed of the decision on Sunday.

Renato Paiva, a former player for Mexican side Toluca, took over in February following the departure of fellow Portuguese coach Artur Jorge, who was the architect of Botafogo’s 2024 triumphs in the Brazilian league and Copa Libertadores.

During the group stage of the Club World Cup, Botafogo pulled off a surprise by eliminating Atletico Madrid and reaching the Round of 16 with a 1–0 win over PSG. They were knocked out by fellow Brazilian side Palmeiras, who won 1–0 after extra time.

The team is currently in 8th place in the Brazilian Serie A, six points behind leaders Flamengo, with 27 matches left to play. In August, Botafogo will face Quito in the Copa Libertadores Round of 16.
