Chelsea beat Newcastle to £60M Joao Pedro signing

Future Chelsea striker Joao Pedro

    Key Takeaways:

  • Chelsea will pay £60M for Joao Pedro after agreeing a deal with Brighton
  • The Brazilian striker is set to join immediately and could debut at the Club World Cup
  • Newcastle had a £50M bid rejected as Pedro only wanted a Chelsea move

Chelsea have reached an agreement with Brighton for the transfer of Joao Pedro. According to English media, the London club will pay £60 million for the striker, who will sign a seven-year contract. The 23-year-old Brazilian will fly directly from his home country to the United States, where he will undergo medical checks and immediately join Enzo Maresca’s squad. He could make his debut as early as the quarterfinal clash of the Club World Cup against Palmeiras.

Newcastle also showed strong interest in Pedro, having seen a £50 million offer rejected by Brighton last week. However, Sky Sports reports that the player was only interested in a move to Chelsea.

Watford, who sold Pedro to Brighton in 2023 for £35 million, will receive 20% of Brighton’s profit from the transfer. Brighton will also retain a clause entitling them to a share from any future sale of the Brazilian.

Chelsea are also close to finalising the signing of Jamie Bynoe-Gittens from Borussia Dortmund. He too will sign a seven-year contract, with Chelsea set to pay £55.5 million. The 20-year-old Englishman will not be eligible to play for Chelsea at the Club World Cup, as he has already participated in the tournament with Dortmund.
