Beasley under federal investigation over alleged match-fixing in NBA

Detroit Pistons guard Malik Beasley is under federal investigation for alleged involvement in match-fixing during games he participated in, ESPN reported.

The probe focuses on the 2023/24 season, when Beasley played for the Milwaukee Bucks – one of six NBA teams he has represented during his career.

Beasley has been in the NBA since 2016, when he was drafted 19th overall by the Denver Nuggets. Last season he signed a one-year, $6 million deal with Detroit and became a free agent on July 1. He was expected to be one of the most sought-after players on the market, with ESPN reporting a concrete offer of a three-year, $42 million contract. However, his arrest casts serious doubt over his future in a league that maintains a strict zero-tolerance policy on match manipulation. The NBA has confirmed it is aware of the case.

Initial suspicion surrounding Beasley’s performance reportedly emerged in January 2024, when unusually large bets were placed on the number of rebounds he would collect in an upcoming game.

During the past season, Beasley featured in all 82 games for Detroit, averaging 16.3 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game, while shooting 41.6 percent from beyond the arc. In 2021, he was suspended for 12 games for threats of violence and also served 78 days in jail.
