Kane double fires Bayern past Flamengo into Club World Cup last-8

Leon Goretzka celebrates after scoring against Flamengo

    Key Takeaways:

  • Bayern Munich qualified for the quarterfinals of the Club World Cup with a 4:2 win over Flamengo
  • Harry Kane scored twice as the German champions eliminated the Brazilian side in Miami
  • Bayern will now face PSG, who beat Inter Miami 4:0, in the next round

Bayern Munich defeated Flamengo 4:2 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami and secured their expected place in the quarterfinals of the FIFA Club World Cup. The Bavarians had the upper hand for most of the game but occasionally allowed the Brazilians to take initiative, and they capitalised in the best possible way.

Vincent Kompany’s team started strongly and quickly went ahead with an own goal from Erick Pulgar (6′) and a fine strike by Harry Kane (10′). Gerson pulled one back (33′) before Leon Goretzka restored the two-goal lead just before the break (41′). After the restart, Jorginho converted a penalty (55′) to make it 3:2, but Kane’s second goal (73′) settled the match in favour of the German champions.

Bayern convincingly passed through the round of 16 and will next face European champions PSG, who earlier defeated Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami 4:0. The clash between Bayern and PSG will take place on Saturday in Atlanta.

Bayern started in the best possible way and were already 2:0 up by the 10th minute. After just six minutes, Joshua Kimmich delivered a corner, and Erick Pulgar, lacking concentration, turned the ball into his own net.

Four minutes later, Kane made it even better for Bayern. Flamengo lost possession while building out from the back, and Kane struck a superb shot from the edge of the box. Despite using his weaker left foot, the ball deflected off the post and into the net to make it 2:0.

The Brazilians tried to react, but Manuel Neuer saved a dangerous shot from Araujo. In the 33rd minute, Gerson received a good pass from De Arrascaeta and blasted it under the bar, leaving Neuer with no chance – 1:2.

Just before the break, Bayern restored their two-goal advantage. In the 41st minute, Leon Goretzka fired a thunderous shot from outside the box to make it 3:1.

Early in the second half, De Arrascaeta failed to threaten from a free-kick, but in the 53rd minute Flamengo were awarded a penalty. The ball deflected off Olise’s hand after a cross from Jorginho, and referee Michael Oliver pointed to the spot. Jorginho converted coolly for his second goal of the tournament, reducing the deficit to 2:3.

Bayern quickly regained control, and in the 63rd minute Kane’s shot went inches wide. But in the 73rd minute, the England striker struck again. Kimmich won the ball in midfield and picked out Kane in the box. The forward fired a powerful low shot into the near corner for his second of the night – 4:2.
