Al-Hilal pulled off the biggest surprise in the 1/8-finals of the FIFA Club World Cup by eliminating Manchester City with a dramatic 4:3 victory after extra time. Regular time ended 2:2, and after both teams scored again in extra time, it was Marcos Leonardo who sealed the win in the 113th minute. The Saudi Arabian runners-up progressed to the quarterfinals, where they will meet Fluminense, who had earlier knocked out Champions League finalist Inter.

The match started as expected, with the Citizens taking the lead in the 9th minute when Bernardo Silva scored from close range after a rebound. Savinho, Gundogan, and Gvardiol all missed chances, stopped by the outstanding Al-Hilal goalkeeper Yassine Bounou. In the 38th minute, a shot from Jeremy Doku was also saved by the Moroccan international.

After the break, Al-Hilal turned the game around within just five minutes with goals from Marcos Leonardo (47′) and Malcom (52′).

Erling Haaland quickly equalised in the 55th minute, sending the ball into the net following a corner and a messy scramble in the box. The Saudi team appealed for three penalties for fouls inside the area, but the referee remained unmoved.

With no further goals, the game went to extra time. Al-Hilal once again took the lead in the 94th minute when Kalidou Koulibaly headed in a cross from Ruben Neves.

Substitute Phil Foden responded just before the end of the first period of extra time, receiving a brilliant lobbed pass from Rayan Cherki and making it 3:3.

The final blow came in the 113th minute. A header from Sergej Milinkovic-Savic was parried by Ederson, but the ball fell perfectly to Marcos Leonardo, who managed to push it past the line from close range to complete the 4:3 triumph.
