The trust placed in Gilgeous-Alexander by the Thunder leadership is well deserved. This past season, he was the driving force behind the team’s first-ever NBA championship. OKC recorded a franchise-best 68 wins and just 14 losses in the regular season, with the guard finishing as the league’s top scorer at 32.7 points per game.
In the Finals against the Indiana Pacers, he averaged 30.3 points per game, which earned him the Finals MVP award. That made him only the 11th player in NBA history to win both MVP honours in the same season, joining Michael Jordan (four times), LeBron James (twice), Larry Bird (twice), Tim Duncan, Shaquille O’Neal, Hakeem Olajuwon, Magic Johnson, Moses Malone, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Willis Reed.
The guard also posted 72 consecutive games with at least 20 points scored — the fourth-longest such streak in NBA history.
