Di Maria played his final matches for Benfica during the Club World Cup, after which he returned to Argentina and signed with the team where he began his football career. The forward left Rosario in 2007 at just 19 years old to join Lisbon’s Eagles. That move marked the beginning of a glittering career across Europe’s biggest clubs – Real Madrid, Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain, and Juventus.
At his presentation at Rosario Central, the 37-year-old world champion was greeted with a special video that moved the veteran to tears.
Di Maria joined Rosario Central at the age of four and made his first-team debut in 2005 at 17. Over the course of his long and trophy-filled career, he has won close to 30 honours, including the Champions League with Real Madrid and the World Cup with Argentina, where he scored in the final against France in Qatar in 2022.
