The news comes shortly after Newcastle left Isak out of their pre-season tour of the Far East, citing a minor thigh injury. As a result, the Swedish international did not travel with the team to Singapore and South Korea, where the Magpies are scheduled to face Arsenal, a K League All-Star team, and Tottenham. Isak was also not included in Eddie Howe’s squad for the recent 4:0 defeat to Celtic.
Isak is under contract at St James’ Park until 2028, and after two impressive seasons, had entered discussions over a new deal. However, negotiations were halted last summer following the appointment of Paul Mitchell as sporting director, who believed at the time that the striker was already sufficiently secured with a long-term agreement.
In recent weeks, however, Newcastle signaled their willingness to revise that stance. Club officials were prepared to break their long-standing £150,000-per-week wage ceiling and offer Isak a substantial new deal worth £10 million per season in a bid to keep him at the club and ward off rising external interest.
The 24-year-old played a central role in Newcastle’s resurgence, most notably helping them win the 2024/25 Carabao Cup — the club’s first major trophy in 70 years.
With the forward now officially open to a move, Newcastle’s transfer priorities have shifted. The club must decide whether to grant Isak his wish or attempt to change his mind with an improved proposal — all while working behind the scenes to secure a high-profile successor.
