Eddie Howe wants a goalkeeper who can compete with Nick Pope for the starting spot. Newcastle had nearly reached an agreement with Burnley to sign James Trafford, but he is now set to join Manchester City in a deal worth £27 million. Howe knows Ramsdale well, having signed him for Bournemouth back in 2017. Newcastle were also interested in signing him from Arsenal last summer, but the two clubs failed to agree on a price for the 27-year-old England international.
Southampton signed him last August for £18 million, with the fee potentially rising to £25 million including bonuses. He made 30 Premier League appearances during the season but was unable to help Southampton avoid relegation.
