Aston Villa have officially announced the signing of Nice striker Evann Guessand. According to Sky Sports, the Birmingham club will pay an initial £23.5 million for the player, with the total potentially rising to £28 million with bonuses. The 24-year-old, who was also targeted by Wolverhampton, has signed a five-year contract.

Guessand, who is an Ivory Coast international, scored 12 goals in Ligue 1 last season and was named Nice’s Player of the Year. He is a product of the club’s academy and has made a total of 109 appearances and scored 21 goals for the first team. He can play in any position across the attacking line. Aston Villa announced that he will wear the number 29 shirt next season.

This is effectively Aston Villa’s first new signing of the summer. Previously, only 19-year-old Yasin Ozcan had joined the club, with that move arranged back in February. The Turkish youngster made his debut in a friendly against Walsall last month but was loaned out to Anderlecht at the beginning of this month.
