Key Takeaways
- Paris Saint-Germain won first ever UEFA Super Cup
- Tottenham threw away 2-0 lead late on
- Seventh straight win for Champions League holder
Paris Saint-Germain are officially the kings of Europe as the French side overcame Tottenham in the UEFA Super Cup match following a 2-2 draw in regular time and a penalty shootout.
The big disappointment was for the Spurs, who led 2-0 five minutes before the end of the regular 90 minutes thanks to goals from Micky van de Ven (39′) and Cristian Romero (48′), but squandered their lead. Luis Enrique’s substitutes Kang-In Lee (85′) and Goncalo Ramos (90’+4′) restored the parity late on. Shortly before that, Bradley Barcola also scored, but his goal was ruled out for offside.

The match was decided by penalties, where PSG’s scorers from regular time Kang-In Lee and Goncalo Ramos were once again on target, joined by Ousmane Dembele and Nuno Mendes.
The UEFA Super Cup is the first in the trophy cabinet of a French club. PSG had previously contested the trophy once at the end of the 20th century, when they crashed to Juventus with a 9-2 aggregate score over two legs after winning the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup in 1996.
It was also the seventh consecutive year that the title was won by the Champions League holders. The last Europa League winners to claim the trophy were Atletico Madrid in 2018.
For the French side, new goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier made his debut after arriving from Lille just a few days ago. The starting XI also featured Hakimi, Marquinhos, Vitinha, Doue, and Dembele, who had all played key roles in the Champions League final against Inter just over two months earlier. The decisive role for Luis Enrique, however, came from the substitutes, who effectively turned the match around in regular time and later scored two of the penalties.
Tottenham’s new manager Thomas Frank, for his part, made an interesting decision to start without Brennan Johnson, who had scored the winning goal against Manchester United in the Europa League final. Still, other heroes from the clash at San Mames – Richarlison, Pedro Porro, and goalkeeper Vicario – were in the starting lineup.
