Mason Greenwood’s Possible Jamaica Selection Sparks Debate Ahead of World Cup Play-offs

Marseille forward Mason Greenwood

Key Takeaways:

  • Jamaica’s football federation have completed Mason Greenwood’s passport, but he declined a call-up in September
  • Some Jamaican players voiced reservations, citing commitment concerns for those who missed qualifying campaigns
  • Greenwood currently leads the Ligue 1 scoring charts with ten goals in 12 matches for Marseille

Greenwood’s International Status Remains Unclear

Mason Greenwood’s prospects of representing the Jamaican national football team are yet to be resolved, even after the country’s football authorities finalised the necessary passport arrangements. Although the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) have kept the possibility of selection open for the March World Cup play-offs, Greenwood opted against joining the squad in September – a decision reportedly attributed to personal reasons.

Michael Ricketts, the JFF president, had anticipated Greenwood’s inclusion following the completion of his documentation. However, alongside the family aspect, Greenwood’s absence was also shaped by Marseille’s Champions League commitments and what has been described as the French club’s preference to avoid a 10,000-mile round trip to Kingston disrupting their forward’s domestic season.

Mixed Reaction Among Jamaican Squad Members

While federation officials remain eager to welcome Greenwood, consensus within the squad appears divided. Isaac Hayden told The Athletic that players who “did not commit during qualifying” should not walk into a World Cup squad. Similarly, Amari’i Bell reflected on the dedication shown by the current group across qualifying, adding that years of “blood, sweat and tears” are at stake for those already present.

Legal Issues and Club Success

Greenwood was arrested in January 2022 on suspicion of rape and assault after visual and audio evidence was circulated online. He was subsequently charged with attempted rape, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and controlling or coercive behaviour. The Crown Prosecution Service dropped the case in February 2023, citing withdrawn witnesses and fresh material that made conviction improbable. Greenwood denied all allegations and moved to Marseille in the summer of 2024.

This season Greenwood is Ligue 1’s joint-leading scorer, having netted ten goals in twelve matches for Les Olympiens.
