Dominant First Half Performance

Roma delivered a commanding display at Celtic Park, prevailing 3:0 against Celtic during the sixth round of the Europa League’s principal stage. The Italian side set the tone early and secured all three points by half-time, courtesy of a fifth minute own goal from Liam Scales, followed by a brace from Evan Ferguson in the 36th and 45+1st minutes. Remarkably, Roma had already overcome another Glasgow powerhouse, Rangers, in their prior away fixture, winning 2:0 on that occasion.

Match Analysis

The visiting side wasted no time dictating proceedings. Six minutes into the contest, a corner kick unsettled the Celtic defence, leading to Scales inadvertently turning the ball past his own goalkeeper to hand Roma the advantage. Celtic’s woes intensified in the 27th minute when Evan Ferguson struck the post after finding space in the penalty area, but the Irishman pressed on and eventually struck twice before the break. His first came after Mehmet Zeki Çelik found him inside the box; Ferguson calmly doubled Roma’s lead from close range. Soon after, Matías Soulé provided an incisive ball, which Ferguson converted to secure his second goal and Roma’s third.

Celtic nearly reduced the deficit on the stroke of half-time after Mario Hermoso was penalised for holding Arne Engels in the area. Engels stepped up to take the penalty himself but struck the outside of Mile Svilar’s post.

Second Half Developments

Celtic’s new manager, Wilfried Nancy, responded to the first half setback by making three substitutions at the break, injecting renewed energy into the Scottish side’s attack. The introduction of Kelechi Iheanacho almost paid early dividends, yet his clear-cut opportunity sailed wide of the target. In the 64th minute, Iheanacho thought he had found the net after combining with Engels, but his effort was chalked off for offside by VAR. Roma also had an effort ruled out for offside when substitute Leon Bailey finished a promising move, only for the flag to intervene. With both teams unable to add to the scoreline thereafter, the Italian visitors comfortably saw out their third successive tournament victory.

Standings & Implications

With this result, Gian Piero Gasperini’s charges recorded their third victory in succession, keeping alive their hopes of progressing to the top eight as they move to 10th place, now holding 12 points. Celtic, meanwhile, find themselves in 24th position with 7 points.
