Key Takeaways:

  • The club currently sits one point above the relegation zone, languishing in 16th place in the Premier League
  • Igor Tudor remains convinced his side will avoid relegation, despite a fifth consecutive league loss

Match Analysis: Palace Run Riot After Early Solanke Strike

Tottenham Hotspur endured a humbling 3-1 defeat at the hands of Crystal Palace on Thursday in north London. The hosts started brightly, with Dominic Solanke opening the scoring in the first half. However, their advantage was swiftly squandered as Palace netted three times within a 12-minute spell before the interval, turning the match on its head.

The North London side’s problems were compounded when defender Micky van de Ven was dismissed for a professional foul on Ismaila Sarr, who duly converted from the penalty spot. Jorgen Strand Larsen added the visitors’ second, before Sarr completed his brace. The mood inside Tottenham Hotspur Stadium soured as Spurs struggled to recover.

Troubling Statistics and League Position

This defeat leaves Tottenham in 16th position, precariously placed just one point clear of the relegation zone, following West Ham’s victory at Fulham on Wednesday. With only one win from their last 13 home league outings, Tottenham face the grave prospect of dropping into the second tier of English football for the first time since the 1977-78 season.

Tudor’s Resolve Amid Mounting Pressure

The club’s interim manager, Igor Tudor, has faced mounting scrutiny after three straight defeats since replacing Thomas Frank as head coach. Despite the latest setback, Tudor expressed belief in the squad’s fight, highlighting an improved second-half performance and suggesting there are positive signs amidst the adversity.

“It was two games. After the red card, it was a second game. The second half we tried and I saw interesting things but I’m very disappointed like the fans,” Tudor said.

“We need to work hard and believe. After this game, I believe more than I did before. I know that sounds strange but I saw something in the team.

“Even in the dressing room after the game. When we are complete and choose the right guys, I believe it will be good.”

Tudor remained defiant, resisting questions regarding pressure on his squad: “We need to stop talking about pressure. This is not a topic to speak about. I will not speak any more about pressure.”

Squad Concerns and Survival Prospects

Tudor cited improved energy and spirit, and suggested that the return of key players such as Cristian Romero and Kevin Danso could boost their prospects as they enter the business end of the campaign. Tottenham have just nine matches remaining to avoid only their second season outside the top flight since 1950, beginning with a challenging trip to Liverpool on 15 March, followed by a crucial fixture against fellow strugglers Nottingham Forest.

Tottenham forward Dominic Solanke acknowledged the gravity of the situation, revealing the squad held crisis talks after the match. “We’ve just had a big conversation. We know the position we are in is definitely not where we want to be so we need to figure out how we are going to get out of it as soon as possible,” Solanke said.

“We know there’s been difficulties, but we’re not in a position to make any excuses anymore. We need to do the job on the pitch. It is easy to say we want to be better but we want to be better on the pitch.

“We need to fight and realise the position we are in.”

Despite the growing pressure, Tudor stated he is not preoccupied with job security, remarking: “I don’t think in that direction. I have my job to do. Still nine games to play.”

“The message I said to the players is not public. I know it is not easy. It is a moment but it will pass.”
