Chukwuemeka Switches Allegiance from England to Austria Ahead of Upcoming World Cup

Carney Chukwuemeka

Key Takeaways:

  • Carney Chukwuemeka has received FIFA approval to represent Austria instead of England at this summer’s World Cup
  • The 22-year-old previously played for England at four youth levels and was top scorer at the under-19 Euros in 2022
  • Chukwuemeka has made 30 appearances and scored three goals for Borussia Dortmund since joining last summer

International Career Switch Confirmed

With just under 100 days remaining before the World Cup begins across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, Carney Chukwuemeka, a former Chelsea and Aston Villa midfielder now at Borussia Dortmund, has formally switched national allegiance from England to Austria. FIFA has ratified his change of nationality, making him eligible for a potential World Cup debut with Austria later this month in fixtures against Ghana or South Korea.

Background and Eligibility

Chukwuemeka, aged 22, was born in Vienna and moved to Northampton as a child. Although he could have played for Nigeria due to his parental heritage, the Super Eagles did not qualify for this year’s World Cup. His decision to represent Austria has been influenced by his birthplace and the absence of a senior cap for England, despite his extensive involvement in their youth system from under-17s to under-20s, where he earned a total of 23 caps.

Youth Success with England

Chukwuemeka enjoyed a notable spell with England’s youth teams, culminating in the under-19 European Championship triumph in 2022. During that tournament, he scored three goals, finishing as England’s top scorer, and found the net in the final against Israel. However, he never made an appearance for the senior England squad, with his last call-up being for the under-21s in March 2023 – a camp he had to withdraw from due to injury.

Club Career and Recognition

Chukwuemeka’s potential was evident during his Premier League days, particularly following his first starting appearance for Aston Villa against Brentford in August 2021. He drew praise from Paul Merson, who described him as “outstanding,” adding: “The young kid, Chukwuemeka, was very good. He has got a bright future. I don’t see a lot of the kid’s football. First half, he was outstanding. He was gliding across the pitch. 17 years old, you are playing in the Premier League in the centre of midfield. I mean, that’s a big ask. He will be an absolute star. He glides across the pitch. He is a nice size. He gets on the ball. He looks for it and makes runs without the ball. I think Villa fans going away will definitely be talking about him.”

Since transferring to Borussia Dortmund last summer, Chukwuemeka has featured in 30 first-team matches and registered three goals for the Bundesliga side, largely coming off the bench.

World Cup Prospects

Austria, managed by Ralf Rangnick, have been drawn in Group J, where they will compete against Jordan, Argentina, and Algeria. With a spot in the squad now a real possibility for Chukwuemeka, he joins a team aiming to progress beyond the group stage at this year’s global showpiece.
