Tapsoba Signs Long-Term Deal to Continue Bayer Leverkusen Tenure Until 2031

Bayer Leverkusen defender Edmond Tapsoba

Key Takeaways:

  • Edmond Tapsoba extended his contract with Bayer Leverkusen for five more years, as announced by the club
  • The 27-year-old defender will remain with Leverkusen until 2031, marking over a decade at the club if the contract is completed
  • Tapsoba was an integral part of the squad that clinched Leverkusen’s first Bundesliga and German Cup titles without defeat

Contract Extension Cements Leverkusen Future

Bayer Leverkusen has confirmed that Edmond Tapsoba, the club’s central defender, will continue his career at the BayArena after agreeing to a new five-year contract. The deal, announced by the German side, secures the services of the Burkina Faso international until 2031. Should Tapsoba see out his contract, his stay at Leverkusen will extend beyond ten years, as he joined the team in 2020 from Portuguese outfit Vitoria Guimaraes.

Consistent Presence and Historic Success

Tapsoba played a critical role in what was a landmark season for Leverkusen, helping deliver the club’s inaugural Bundesliga title alongside the German Cup, with the squad going unbeaten throughout. His contributions solidified his reputation as a key defensive figure and a leader in the dressing room.

Club and Player Praises

“Over the last six and a half years, Edmond Tapsoba has become an absolutely key player for the team; he is one of the best defenders in the Bundesliga and performs at the highest international level. He was an indispensable part of the squad that won the double—he made a personal contribution to our success, with great influence in his role as a link between different parts of the team. As one of the most experienced players, Eddie will continue to lead us on the path to building a team that can win the title again,” Bayer Leverkusen wrote, as quoted by DPA.

According to Tapsoba, it is unusual these days for a professional footballer to play for the same club for such a long time, but he believes that Bayer Leverkusen has become something special for him and is like a second home.

“I am proud of what we have achieved together. We have had great experiences and managed to celebrate fantastic titles. This is exactly what we will strive for in the future,” the defender said.

Season Challenges and Objectives

Leverkusen faced a major transition last summer, as much of their previous championship-winning squad left the club. Throughout the current campaign, the team has remained in the shadow of perennial contenders Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, both of whom contested the title race. Entering the final three rounds of competition, Tapsoba and his teammates are now targeting a top-four finish in order to secure qualification for next season’s Champions League.
