Jeff Bezos Engages in Talks with Bhatia Consortium for Potential Liverpool Minority Investment

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos

Key Takeaways:

  • Jeff Bezos has reportedly entered discussions to join Amit Bhatia’s consortium in a bid for a minority stake in Liverpool
  • Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group confirmed that Bhatia’s group approached them about acquiring a share in the club
  • Any potential agreement is expected to resemble the 2023 deal in which Dynasty acquired a minority stake, valuing Liverpool above $6 billion (£4.59bn)

Bezos and Bhatia’s Collaborative Approach

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has reportedly initiated talks regarding participation in a consortium led by British-Indian businessman Amit Bhatia, which has signalled interest in purchasing a minority stake in Premier League giants Liverpool. The news, disclosed on Wednesday, suggests Bezos – who Forbes estimates holds a net worth of £192 billion – could join forces with Bhatia, the son-in-law of billionaire steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal.

Sky News highlighted Bezos’ engagement but noted there is currently no certainty that he will move forward with the prospective investment. This development adds intrigue to the group’s bid, given Bezos’ previous exploration of ownership opportunities in American franchises such as the Seattle Seahawks and Washington Commanders, both of which he ultimately chose not to pursue.

Fenway Sports Group’s Stance and Potential Deal Structure

Fenway Sports Group (FSG), current owners of Liverpool FC, announced on Tuesday that Bhatia’s consortium had made formal contact to discuss investment in the 20-time English champions. Should a deal go ahead, it would mirror the structure of Liverpool’s 2023 minority stake sale to investment firm Dynasty. According to the Financial Times, such a transaction would value the club at more than $6 billion (£4.59bn).

FSG acquired Liverpool in 2010 for £300 million, and also own Major League Baseball’s Boston Red Sox.

Bhatia’s Recent Moves and Consortium Details

Bhatia’s bid surfaced on the same day the 46-year-old ended his 18-year tenure with Queens Park Rangers by stepping down from the Championship club’s board and transferring his shares to majority owner Ruben Gnanalingam. This move frees Bhatia to focus on his Premier League interests.
