Leeds Defensive Changes Link Elvedi And Bornauw Deals

Leeds United’s defensive rebuild has taken shape through two connected Bundesliga-related moves. Nico Elvedi has left Borussia Mönchengladbach for Leeds United, while Sebastiaan Bornauw has returned to Germany after Hamburg officially confirmed his loan arrival from Elland Road for the 2026/27 campaign.

Elvedi’s switch ends a long and highly successful spell at Borussia-Park. The 29-year-old departs after eleven years with Borussia Mönchengladbach, having made 364 competitive appearances and scored 19 goals. Leeds are reportedly paying €10m for the Swiss defender, who has signed a contract through 2029.

Bornauw’s move in the opposite direction, away from Leeds and back to the Bundesliga, has also been confirmed. Multiple reports suggest Hamburg have secured a purchase option worth approximately €4.5m. The Belgian centre-back returns to Germany only one year after completing a €6m transfer from Wolfsburg to Leeds United.

Gladbach Honour Elvedi After Eleven Years At Borussia-Park

Borussia Mönchengladbach sporting director Rouven Schröder delivered a strong tribute to Elvedi after the defender’s departure was finalised. Elvedi joined Gladbach from FC Zürich as an 18-year-old in 2015 and remained a fixture in the side for virtually his entire time in Germany.

“You have to be careful with the word, but Nico Elvedi is a true Borussia legend,” Schröder said. “Eleven years at the club, 364 competitive appearances, always a key performer and a leader without many words. A loss like this hurts, both sporting-wise and personally.

“With a player who has achieved what he has and who has always behaved absolutely impeccably as well, respect demands that we grant him this wish, provided the financial conditions are right,” Schröder continued. “That scenario has now occurred.”

Elvedi also acknowledged that the decision to leave was not straightforward, describing Borussia as having become “like a family” during his eleven years in Germany. His move to Leeds will see him work again with former Gladbach head coach Daniel Farke, whom he described as an important factor in his decision to continue his career in England.

Hamburg Bring Bornauw Back To The Bundesliga

Hamburg have brought Bornauw back to German football after his challenging season at Leeds. The 27-year-old struggled to establish himself under Daniel Farke, making 12 Premier League appearances and 17 competitive outings overall.

HSV see Bornauw as the experienced defensive leader they needed after Luka Vušković’s loan came to an end. The former Köln and Wolfsburg centre-back arrives with 140 Bundesliga appearances, as well as notable aerial and physical qualities.

His return to Germany is also part of a wider Bundesliga transfer domino. Bornauw’s departure from Elland Road has opened space for Leeds to complete the signing of Borussia Mönchengladbach defender Elvedi.

Hamburg Expect Immediate Leadership From Bornauw

Hamburg expect Bornauw to take on major responsibility straight away. The club’s sporting officials have repeatedly highlighted his experience and his ability to organise a defensive line following Vušković’s departure.

“Sebastiaan knows the Bundesliga from his previous clubs and brings a special work ethic,” HSV sporting executive Kathleen Krüger said. “With his personality, he is a great asset to any locker room and fits perfectly into our team structure. He is expected to take on a leading role within the team and make his teammates even better through his leadership abilities.”

“I was convinced from the first moment during my talks with HSV because I could feel the confidence those responsible had in me,” Bornauw said. “I’m really happy to be here. I like the emotions surrounding a traditional club like HSV. That gives me a lot of energy as a player. The fans can expect me to always give everything for my team.”
