Klopp Unveils Record-Breaking 44-Man Germany Squad Featuring 16 New Faces for Nations League

Germany NT head coach Jurgen Klopp

Key Takeaways:

  • Jurgen Klopp named a 44-man Germany squad, including 16 first-time call-ups
  • The squad is split into two groups for four UEFA Nations League fixtures, starting against the Netherlands in Amsterdam on September 24
  • Marc-Andre ter Stegen will serve as first-choice goalkeeper, while Joshua Kimmich remains captain

Unprecedented Squad Selection for Germany’s Upcoming Fixtures

Germany head coach Jurgen Klopp revealed a 44-player squad on Thursday for his inaugural training camp since assuming the role during the summer. Notably, the squad contains 16 debutants, reflecting Klopp’s intention to assess a wide pool of talent following Germany’s elimination at the last-32 stage of the 2026 World Cup.

Despite UEFA regulations permitting teams to list 20 outfield players and three goalkeepers for each match, Klopp has departed from the norm by assembling an enlarged group. He explained that the players have been organised into two separate line-ups to feature across Germany’s four UEFA Nations League encounters over a two-week period.

The first of these groups will compete away against the Netherlands in Amsterdam on 24 September, before hosting Greece in Augsburg three days after. The second group is earmarked for matches with Serbia in Munich on 1 October and Greece in Thessaloniki on 4 October.

Klopp’s Vision: Blending Youth with Experience

At a press conference in Frankfurt, Klopp commented, “It’s very unusual that you’ve got four games in two weeks with the national team,” before declaring his strategy of evaluating as many players as possible in a compressed timeframe. He clarified that the split does not represent ‘A’ and ‘B’ squads, but instead two carefully balanced units.

Klopp was appointed as successor to Julian Nagelsmann in July, following Germany’s third successive early World Cup exit. The new coach reflected on the state of German football after the tournament, asserting that there is still significant untapped talent within the system, and emphasised that his selections are focused on nurturing players for the next two or three years, not only the upcoming fixtures.

Squad News: Notable Absences and New Additions

The squad sees several high-profile omissions, with Leroy Sane, Deniz Undav, Leon Goretzka, and goalkeeper Oliver Baumann all left out. Manuel Neuer and Antonio Rudiger have retired from international duty.

Marc-Andre ter Stegen has been installed as the number one goalkeeper, with Klopp stating that the 2015 Champions League winner is Germany’s “preferred option for the moment”. Ter Stegen moved from Barcelona to Ajax on a season-long loan over the summer, following an injury-plagued period limiting him to only 12 matches in the past two years.

Joshua Kimmich, the most capped player in the squad with 114 international appearances, will continue as captain and is set to shift from right-back to central midfield, mirroring his position for Bayern Munich.

Deniz Undav, who was one of Germany’s stand-out performers at the World Cup, has not been selected, with German media attributing this to his recovery from an Achilles tendon injury.

Debutants and Rising Prospects

Of the 16 potential debutants, some notable names include Eintracht Frankfurt’s Younes Ebnoutalib, who played in the second division last season, Stuttgart defender Finn Jeltsch, Brentford midfielder Vitaly Janelt, and Celtic’s Mika Baur.

Klopp has expressed confidence in the newcomers, stating, “There’s a couple of lads here who will surprise you, that’s clear, but we saw something in the lads, plenty of potential, and we want to be part of their development.”
