Roma’s Madrid Defeat Brings Both Encouragement and Concern
Roma suffered a dramatic and unexpected 4-3 defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday, a match that offered both promise and problems for Gian Piero Gasperini’s side.
The Giallorossi created enough to suggest they could have added further goals, and there were encouraging performances from players introduced during the contest. However, the major concern centred on Manu Kone and Paulo Dybala, both of whom were forced off.
Kone, the French midfielder, started brightly and impressed during the first 15 minutes before he was withdrawn with what appeared to be a muscle problem. Niccolo Pisilli came on in his place and made an impact from the bench.
Dybala was then replaced at half-time, with Rodrigo Mora introduced and also contributing positively after coming on.

Medical Checks Scheduled as Roma Await Clarity
Roma are increasingly worried about the condition of both Kone and Dybala. The concern is particularly strong in Kone’s case, as he broke down and appeared devastated when he had to leave the pitch. Both players are set to undergo medical tests today, which will determine the seriousness of their respective issues.
| Player | Situation | Current Status |
|---|---|---|
| Manu Kone | Impressed in the first 15 minutes before leaving with what looked like a muscle injury | Will undergo a medical test tomorrow |
| Paulo Dybala | Was taken off at half-time against Real Madrid | Will undergo a medical test tomorrow |
| Donyell Malen | Suspended after his red card against Como | Out for the Genoa tie |
| Mile Svilar | Injured | Out |
| Bryan Cristante | Unavailable | Out for the next few weeks |
Genoa Preparations Hit by Selection Problems
Roma are already dealing with absences before the upcoming Genoa clash. Donyell Malen is suspended for that fixture following his red card against Como, while Mile Svilar is also sidelined through injury.
Bryan Cristante is unavailable for the next few weeks, and if Kone and Dybala also miss the Genoa match, it would represent another significant setback for Gasperini’s side.
Wesley Stands Out Despite the Result
While the defeat to Real Madrid brought frustration, Brazilian wing-back Wesley emerged with considerable credit. He has been a regular for Roma since joining in 2025 and, against Real Madrid, operated at right wing-back. During the ongoing campaign, he has also filled in comfortably on the left-sided berth.
His display drew specific attention from Jose Mourinho, who was impressed by the way Wesley performed in that role.
The Portuguese told TNT: “I already knew he was a good player, but it was the first time I’d seen him play in that position, and he impressed me even more than thought. He defends very well and then moves forward with great pace. Wesley is a truly excellent player.”
Facing Vinicius Jr is never straightforward, but Mourinho highlighted how effectively Wesley handled his compatriot while also troubling Real Madrid going the other way.
“He made life difficult for Vinícius in attack and caused us problems in defence.”
Wesley Responds to Mourinho Praise
Wesley was asked about Mourinho’s comments after the match and made clear that the praise meant a great deal to him.
Wesley said: “I’m happy, it’s nice to receive a compliment from a coach like Mourinho.”
“I just prayed and said to myself: ‘I have to stop Vinícius, I have to stop Vinícius.’ I was prepared and I’m happy with my game. I still have to improve in many areas, but I’m satisfied with my individual performance. I still have a lot to improve, but I’m not satisfied with the team’s result, because we deserved to win.”
The Brazil international has already been linked with a host of major clubs, and it would not be a surprise if he secures another big move soon.
