Adjustment Period at Anfield

Bradley Barcola (24) continues to acclimate to English football following his high-profile move to Liverpool from Paris Saint-Germain during the summer transfer window. The transfer, valued at up to €140m, brought the French winger to Merseyside after his time with the Ligue 1 champions.

Since his arrival, Barcola has featured in eight matches across all competitions for Liverpool. He made an immediate impact in European competition, netting his first three goals for the club and registering his maiden professional hat-trick in a 6-3 triumph over LASK. Despite going close to scoring in the Premier League, specifically during Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Brentford on Saturday, he has yet to find the back of the net in the league.

Contrasting Styles: Premier League Versus Ligue 1

In an interview with TF1’s Téléfoot prior to the Brentford fixture, Barcola emphasised the stark contrasts between English and French top-flight football. He specifically noted a reduced tactical focus in the Premier League compared to his experiences at PSG under manager Luis Enrique:

“I am trying to adapt because it is very different to Paris Saint-Germain. The Premier League? It is different. I find that it is less tactical. In any case, we (PSG) had a very, very tactical manager (Luis Enrique), but I find that it is less tactical; there are fewer changes on the pitch. It is true that, with my former manager, I had to come inside, play down the wing, someone else would then take my position. Here, it is very different,” Barcola told Téléfoot.

Physical Demands Take Their Toll

This is not the first time Barcola has commented on the divergence between the two leagues. In a previous discussion with Sky Sports, he remarked that Ligue 1 features “a lot more strong (physical) players.” In his view, the Premier League requires considerably more running, a significant factor that, according to the Olympique Lyonnais academy product, has contributed to his experience with muscle cramps near the end of matches this season.
