Marseille Face Potential Mid-Season Departures

Olympique de Marseille could be facing a significant mid-season squad issue, with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Igor Paixao both keen to leave the club during the January transfer window, as reported by Mohamed Toubache-Ter.

Paixao had already been heavily linked with a departure during the summer. However, the Brazilian ultimately remained at Marseille after Bruno Genesio made clear that he wanted the player to be retained. Sporting director Grégory Lorenzi backed Genesio’s position, and owner Frank McCourt subsequently went back on his decision to sell, despite talks having taken place with Sunderland.

Despite staying at the club, Paixao now wants to leave Marseille in January. Hojbjerg is also looking to move on during the same window, having rejected a summer switch to Newcastle United. As a result, Marseille could lose two key players in the middle of the season.

Gomes Apologises After Difficult Run

Angel Gomes has apologised to Marseille manager Bruno Genesio for his recent performances, according to Mohamed Toubache-Ter.

The England international had previously been expected to have no future at Marseille. He joined the club in the summer of 2025 after his contract at Lille expired, arriving with high expectations. However, the midfielder did not meet those expectations and left to join Wolverhampton Wanderers on loan midway through the season.

After Wolves were relegated from the Premier League, Gomes returned to the Vélodrome. Marseille’s financial situation and their inability to recruit then gave him another opportunity at the club.

In the opening weeks of the season, Gomes has struggled, even though he scored against Paris Saint-Germain. The former Manchester United midfielder has also been the target of criticism from supporters in recent weeks.

Toubache-Ter understands that Gomes has acknowledged that his displays have fallen short of the required standard, and promised to do everything he can to rediscover his best form.
