    Key Takeaways:

  • Liverpool secured their 20th English league title after a 5-1 win against Tottenham
  • With four rounds left, the Reds pulled 15 points ahead of Arsenal
  • Liverpool matched Manchester United’s record for most top-flight titles

Liverpool are champions of England for the 20th time in their history. This became a fact after the Merseysiders crushed Tottenham 5-1 at Anfield, pulling 15 points clear of Arsenal with four rounds remaining in the Premier League season. Spurs took a surprising lead in the 12th minute through former Liverpool player Dominic Solanke. However, that only galvanized the hosts, who had already turned the score around to 3-1 by the 34th minute with goals from Luis Diaz (16’), Alexis Mac Allister (24’), and Cody Gakpo (34’). After the break, the Reds continued to play with flair, and Mohamed Salah (63’) and an own goal from Destiny Udogie (69’) sealed the final score, kicking off well-deserved celebrations among players and fans – something they could not fully enjoy during the 2019-20 title win due to the COVID-19 pandemic. With this title, Liverpool’s second in the Premier League era, they drew level with their eternal rivals Manchester United in terms of top-flight championships. The trophy will officially be presented to the Reds after their match against Crystal Palace on May 25.

Liverpool started brightly, but on Tottenham’s first corner, the visitors took the lead. Dominic Solanke rose highest to meet James Maddison’s delivery and headed powerfully into the net, punishing one of his former clubs. However, the Merseysiders equalised just four minutes later when Salah played a perfect pass behind the defence to Dominik Szoboszlai, who immediately squared it for Diaz to finish from close range.

The full comeback was completed in the 24th minute when Spurs failed to deal with Liverpool’s pressing, lost possession, and Mac Allister unleashed a stunning strike from the edge of the area to make it 2-1. Liverpool continued to dominate, and in the 34th minute, the score became 3-1. Mac Allister delivered a corner, Bergvall initially cleared, but Gakpo reacted quickest and fired a precise shot into the corner.

In the 63rd minute, Salah finally got his goal on this celebratory day after Szoboszlai made a fine run through the centre before finding the Egyptian on the right. Salah shrugged off Udogie and fired into the near corner for 4-1. In the 70th minute, Destiny Udogie scored an own goal after Trent Alexander-Arnold’s cross toward Salah. Liverpool could have scored even more goals before the end, but what they had already achieved was more than enough for the jubilant Merseyside fans.
