Bayern Munich have officially announced the signing of Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah. The 29-year-old German international joins the Bavarians on a free transfer and has signed a contract until 30 June 2029. The centre-back will wear the number 4 shirt for the record German champions.

Tah previously played for Hamburger, Fortuna Dusseldorf, and Bayer Leverkusen. His greatest achievements came with Bayer, where he won the domestic double last season and reached the Europa League final. He spent a full decade at Leverkusen — from 2015 to 2025 — making 402 appearances and scoring 18 goals. For the German national team, Tah has earned 35 caps and became a regular starter in the heart of the defence.

“I’m very happy to be at Bayern. I want to take on responsibility here and work hard every day so we can achieve success,” said Bayern’s new signing. The player had also been linked with a move to Barcelona but ultimately chose to join the Allianz Arena club.

Sporting director Max Eberl added: “It’s no secret that Jonathan Tah has been on our radar for a long time. We value his qualities — he’s a character who takes responsibility. Jonathan had many offers, but he chose Bayern, which makes us very happy.”

It is still unclear whether Tah will be available to Vincent Kompany for the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup, as his contract with Leverkusen expires on 30 June. Leverkusen are reportedly insisting on a fee to release him early. Negotiations between the two clubs are ongoing, with an update expected soon.
