    Key Takeaways:

  • Eddie Howe eyes 24-year-old Englishman as key midfield target
  • Gallagher made just 19 La Liga starts in 2024/25 despite 50 total appearances
  • Newcastle and Atletico to meet in friendly this August amid transfer links

Newcastle are preparing an offer for Atletico Madrid midfielder and former Chelsea player Conor Gallagher, according to Mundo Deportivo. Manager Eddie Howe is determined to strengthen the Magpies’ midfield this summer, and the 24-year-old Englishman is one of their top targets.

Since joining Atletico last summer, Gallagher has played 50 matches in all competitions, but started just 19 times in La Liga, raising questions about his role under Diego Simeone. While valued at the club, the player himself is considering a move to boost his chances of making England’s 2026 World Cup squad.

Atletico reportedly value Gallagher at around £36 million (€42 million) and are expected to be open to a sale if the right offer arrives.

The midfielder has substantial Premier League experience, having made 136 appearances for Chelsea, Crystal Palace, and West Bromwich Albion.

Adding fuel to the rumours, Newcastle and Atletico are set to face each other in a friendly in August. The two clubs have a solid transfer history, including deals involving Kieran Trippier, Javier Manquillo, and Jesus Gamez.
