Newcastle ready to break wage cap to fend off Liverpool’s move for Isak

Alexander Isak shoots towards Liverpool goal under pressure by Virgil Van Dijk

    Key Takeaways:

  • Liverpool are ready to bid £120 million for Newcastle striker Alexander Isak
  • Newcastle are prepared to break their wage cap to keep him
  • Isak already has a contract until 2028 but talks for extension were paused last summer

Liverpool’s strong interest in Newcastle striker Alexander Isak could force the Magpies to abandon their strict wage cap policy, reports The Sun. According to local media, the Anfield club are ready to make an offer of £120 million for the player, but the team from the Scottish border are unwilling to part ways with their star and have been firm in rejecting any approaches.

The Swede is under contract until 2028, and his excellent performances in his first two seasons earned him negotiations for a new deal. However, talks were unexpectedly halted last summer when then newly appointed sporting director Paul Mitchell decided that, at the time, the forward was already sufficiently tied down with a long-term agreement.

Now, however, St James’ Park officials are willing to overlook their self-imposed £150,000-per-week wage ceiling and offer Isak a substantial new contract worth £10 million per season, in a bid to convince him to remain at the club and ignore the rising interest. He was one of the key figures behind the team’s Carabao Cup triumph — the first trophy for the Magpies in 70 years.
