    Key Takeaways:

  • Serie A players will see a 25% salary cut if their team is relegated
  • The rule applies to contracts signed after 2 September 2025
  • Minimum wage based on age cannot be reduced even after relegation

Players from Italy’s top-flight division will automatically have their salaries reduced by 25% if their teams are relegated to the second division. The rule was adopted after the signing of a new agreement between the country’s football association and Serie A on Tuesday.

The salary reduction is aimed at easing the financial pressure on clubs that lose their place in Serie A. The rule will be applied to all contracts signed after 2 September 2025 – the end of the upcoming summer transfer window.

The new system automatically reduces salaries unless a different clause is included in the player’s contract. Existing contracts will remain subject to previously agreed terms. If a team returns to Serie A, the affected salaries will be restored to their original value.

The collective labour agreement also introduces a minimum wage structure based on the player’s age, which cannot be reduced even if the team is relegated from the top division.
