Tottenham confirmed that midfielder James Maddison will miss most of the upcoming season, revealing the player has torn the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

Maddison missed the end of the 2024–25 campaign due to a knee injury, but returned to action for pre-season under new Spurs manager Thomas Frank. The England international came on as a substitute during the friendly against Newcastle (1:1) in South Korea, but collapsed in pain without contact in the 86th minute. Fears within the club were confirmed, and Maddison is now set to undergo surgery in the coming days.

“We can confirm that James Maddison will undergo surgery for a ruptured Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) in his right knee. We will be supporting you every step of the way, Madders” read Tottenham’s official statement.

“The 28-year-old midfielder suffered the injury during our pre-season friendly against Newcastle United on Sunday in Seoul. His surgery will take place in the coming days and, following that, James will then begin his rehabilitation with our medical team. Everyone at Tottenham Hotspur wishes James a full and speedy recovery. We will be supporting him every step of the way” the club added.
