Newcastle and Aston Villa agree £40M deal for Jacob Ramsey

Aston Villa player Jacob Ramsey

Key Takeaways:

  • Newcastle have reached verbal agreement with Aston Villa for Jacob Ramsey
  • Transfer worth £40 million will be club’s second signing after Elanga
  • Aston Villa forced to sell due to Financial Fair Play issues

Newcastle are very close to signing Jacob Ramsey, after the Magpies reached a verbal agreement yesterday with Aston Villa over the terms of the deal. The St James’ Park side have agreed to pay £40 million for the player, who will become their second summer signing after Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest.

The Birmingham club had little desire to part ways with the player but are facing serious Financial Fair Play issues and need fresh income to balance their finances. This is the main reason they agreed to let Ramsey go.

Newcastle, for their part, have suffered a series of setbacks after missing out on several transfer targets in succession – including Joao Pedro, Liam Delap, Matheus Cunha, and Benjamin Sesko – but now appear to be closing in on one of the most promising young footballers in England. The St James’ Park club are still searching for an attacking addition to help ease the difficult situation surrounding Alexander Isak.
