Hojlund Faces Uncertain Future at Old Trafford

Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund

Key Takeaways:

  • Rasmus Hojlund was excluded from Manchester United’s squad during the 1-0 defeat by Arsenal at Old Trafford on Sunday.
  • Atalanta, RB Leipzig, Fulham, Newcastle United, Juventus, and AC Milan have all expressed interest in signing the Danish striker ahead of the transfer window’s conclusion.
  • Manager Ruben Amorim has warned Hojlund his playing time will be limited, particularly following Benjamin Sesko’s arrival from RB Leipzig.

Transfer Interest Intensifies Surrounding Hojlund

Rasmus Hojlund has become a focal point in the current transfer window, with reports linking him to a potential return to Atalanta. The 22-year-old forward first rose to prominence with the Italian club, where he scored 10 goals in 34 matches before transferring to Manchester United for £72million two summers ago.

Since arriving at Old Trafford, Hojlund has found life in the Premier League challenging. A lack of confidence and consistent service has hampered his effectiveness leading United’s attack, first under Erik ten Hag and, more recently, Ruben Amorim. Last season, he managed just four league goals, enduring a difficult sequence of 21 games without scoring as Manchester United finished a disappointing 15th in the table.

Falling Out of Favour at Manchester United

With Benjamin Sesko’s addition from RB Leipzig, Hojlund appears to have slipped further down the pecking order. Manager Ruben Amorim has reportedly been direct with the striker about his limited opportunities moving forward. At the weekend, Amorim’s position was underlined when Hojlund was left out of the matchday squad, forced to watch from the stands as United suffered a 1-0 defeat to Arsenal at home.

Amorim addressed the situation, stating: ‘At United, if you don’t do what’s required, a team-mate will take your place,’ and, ‘I’ve made a lot of mistakes, but I’ve shown that if you deserve it, you play. He has to fight for his place. We will see what’s going to happen in the market. Rasmus has the same characteristics as Ben, so sometimes we need to chose.’

Clubs Lining up for the Danish Striker

Interest in Hojlund remains high despite his struggles at United. Atalanta are reportedly considering bringing him back to Serie A, according to The Athletic. Alongside Atalanta, RB Leipzig, Fulham, Newcastle United, and Juventus are all said to be monitoring the forward’s situation. AC Milan’s sporting director Igli Tare publicly confirmed their interest in Hojlund on Monday, noting to Mediaset: ‘Hojlund is a good option for us. We are thinking about him but in the transfer market you never know what could happen.’

Daily Mail Sport revealed last week that AC Milan submitted a proposal for a £4.5million loan fee, including an option to buy for £39m.

Player’s Stance and Future Prospects

Despite the strong interest, Hojlund has so far reiterated his determination to remain at Manchester United and fight for his place. Whether this resolve withstands his omission from Sunday’s squad remains to be seen as the transfer window progresses. Hojlund has featured in 95 matches and scored 26 goals for Manchester United since arriving in the summer of 2023.
