Key Takeaways:
- Axel Disasi remained at Chelsea after a late attempt to rejoin Monaco at the end of the summer transfer window
- Despite Bournemouth and West Ham expressing interest, Disasi’s priority was a loan move back to Ligue 1
- A deal with Monaco collapsed in the final hours due to Chelsea’s internal policies on international loans and purchase clauses
Transfer Window Tensions
Chelsea defender Axel Disasi has confirmed he made significant efforts until the close of the summer transfer window to engineer a return to his former side Monaco. The French international, who spent his previous season on loan at Aston Villa, has found himself surplus to requirements under the management of Enzo Maresca and remained at Stamford Bridge following the collapse of outgoing transfer discussions.
Player’s Preference and Interest from Other Clubs
Although Bournemouth and West Ham both considered moves for the 27-year-old centre-back, Disasi was determined to secure a switch back to Ligue 1. Monaco emerged as his favoured destination, motivated by his positive three-year spell with the club and strong emotional ties to the Principality side.

“I had three incredible years at Monaco. When the opportunity arose, all the memories came back. Monaco is home. I was hoping Chelsea would find a solution and let me go on loan. I pushed until the end for it to happen,” Disasi told Le Media Carre.
Regulatory Constraints and Failed Negotiations
FIFA’s rules restrict clubs to a maximum of six players out on international loan simultaneously, a limit Chelsea had already reached halfway at the time. Furthermore, the London club generally insists on a mandatory purchase clause for outgoing loans. As a result, a potential arrangement with Monaco that would have been worth about £20 million was abandoned in the final hours of the transfer period.
