Fulham Assess Managerial Alternatives as Marco Silva’s Future Remains Uncertain

Fulham manager Marco Silva

Key Takeaways:

  • Fulham suffered a 2-0 defeat to Everton on Saturday and currently sit just above the Premier League relegation zone after 11 matches
  • Marco Silva is reportedly hesitant to sign a new contract, prompting the club to consider alternative head coaches
  • Brendan Rodgers, Erik ten Hag, Liam Rosenior, and Michael Carrick are four potential replacements under consideration

Current Situation at Craven Cottage

Fulham’s board are reportedly deliberating Marco Silva’s position at the club, as the Portuguese manager has shown reluctance to agree a new deal in London. The west London club, who experienced an impressive campaign under Silva last season, now find themselves just above the drop zone after 11 league fixtures, following their 2-0 loss to Everton on Saturday.

Silva guided Fulham to 15 Premier League victories last season, clinching an 11th-placed finish. However, this term has proven more challenging, with defeats to Chelsea, Bournemouth, and Arsenal compounding their struggles.

In-Depth Look at the Candidates

Brendan Rodgers, who narrowly missed out on Premier League glory with Liverpool in 2013 and recently vacated his position with Celtic, remains available and may be intrigued by another Premier League challenge. Nevertheless, Rodgers’ managerial journey included a difficult final spell at Leicester City, culminating in his dismissal in April of the 2023/24 campaign after the club were relegated.

Erik ten Hag’s coaching reputation includes great success with Ajax, where he clinched three league titles, and notable honours at Manchester United – triumphing in both the Carabao Cup and FA Cup. Ten Hag, however, experienced back-to-back sackings within a year following exits from Manchester United and more recently Bayer Leverkusen at the start of September. The Dutchman may view Fulham as a suitable opportunity to reinstate his credentials in English football.

Liam Rosenior enjoyed a productive spell with Hull, achieving a seventh-placed finish in the Championship last season. Despite falling short of the play-offs, he was relieved of his duties by the Tigers and subsequently joined Strasbourg. Under his leadership, Strasbourg have started strongly and currently occupy fourth spot in Ligue 1, with seven victories in their opening 12 fixtures. Rosenior is recognised for his tactical nous and could present Fulham with a progressive managerial option.

Michael Carrick, formerly assistant to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Manchester United, has also impressed as a manager in the Championship. He led Middlesbrough to the play-offs in 2023 and secured two further top 10 finishes in the second tier before being dismissed this summer. This season, Carrick has also contributed to Match of the Day 2, gaining exposure as a pundit. Fulham’s decision-makers may consider him a strong fit for the Craven Cottage role.
