Curtis Jones and Nicolo Barella

Key Takeaways:

  • Inter are reported to be considering moves for Liverpool’s Curtis Jones and Giovanni Leoni ahead of the 2026-27 season
  • Talks previously took place regarding a possible loan for Jones with a €40m option to buy at the end of January
  • Leoni joined Liverpool in a €35m transfer last summer but has only played 81 minutes this season due to an ACL injury

Inter Eyeing Squad Reshuffle in Midfield

According to recent reports from Italy, Inter have set their sights on two Liverpool players – Curtis Jones and Giovanni Leoni – in preparation for a potential squad overhaul before the 2026-27 campaign. Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport indicates that the Nerazzurri may attempt to reopen negotiations with Liverpool regarding Curtis Jones during the summer transfer window.

Discussions regarding a move for Jones were initially reported near the conclusion of the most recent January window. At the time, Inter considered acquiring the English midfielder as a contingency should Davide Frattesi depart during the closing days of the transfer period. However, neither transfer came to fruition.

Looking ahead, Inter may be forced to revamp their midfield options as multiple departures loom. Henrikh Mkhitaryan is currently out of contract with the prospect of retiring at the end of the season. Additionally, Hakan Calhanoglu continues to be a primary target for Galatasaray, his childhood club, while there has also been speculation that Nicolo Barella’s future at Inter is uncertain.

Potential Transfer Details for Curtis Jones

With the possibility of significant midfield changes, renewed discussions for Jones are reportedly on the table for the coming summer. Previous reports connected Inter with a potential loan move including a €40m option to purchase, which was considered at the end of January. As it stands, unless Curtis Jones agrees to a contract extension before the current campaign concludes, he will enter the final year of his Liverpool contract in the summer.

Giovanni Leoni’s Future and Recovery

Alongside interest in Jones, reports also point to Inter tracking Giovanni Leoni. The young defender made a €35m switch to Liverpool from Parma during the most recent summer window. Unfortunately, Leoni suffered a significant cruciate ligament injury (ACL tear) on his very first starting appearance for the Reds, limiting his involvement this season to just 81 minutes.

Liverpool may consider loaning Leoni out for the 2026-27 campaign in order to facilitate regular first-team experience for the teenager. Should Liverpool decide to pursue this route, Inter are reportedly ready to offer him a place in Serie A for the duration of his recovery and development.
