Injury and Selection Latest Ahead of PSG Clash
Chelsea will be without captain Reece James when they attempt to overturn a 5-2 deficit against reigning European champions Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday evening at Stamford Bridge. Manager Liam Rosenior confirmed on Monday that James suffered a hamstring issue during the closing stages of Chelsea’s narrow Premier League defeat to Newcastle United last week, ruling him out of the pivotal knockout tie.
James, who only last week committed his future to the Blues until 2032 by signing a six-year contract extension, was unable to participate in pre-match training. Rosenior acknowledged the injury could be significant, stating: “Reece felt something in his hamstring towards the end of the Newcastle game,” Rosenior told reporters. “We don’t know the full extent of the injury yet, but he will be out for tomorrow’s game.
“It could be serious – with a hamstring injury, it’s never ideal. Hopefully, we can get him scanned and find out more.”

Squad Concerns and Disciplinary Update
Further complicating Chelsea’s preparation, right back Malo Gusto did not train due to illness, while goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen reported groin discomfort and will undergo further assessment. Rosenior explained: “Malo is ill today, so we’ll look at that tomorrow. With Filip, he’s felt something in his groin and we will get him scanned,” he said.
On a positive note, winger Pedro Neto is free to play after receiving only a warning from UEFA for pushing a ball boy during the first-leg at Parc des Princes. Rosenior commented: “He’s a fantastic player, he has apologised for the incident and I think UEFA have made the right decision,” Rosenior said.
Chelsea Face Financial Sanctions
Earlier on Monday, the Blues were sanctioned for historical breaches of Premier League regulations, with a record fine of 10.75 million pounds. Alongside the financial penalty, the club received a one-year ban on first-team transfers, suspended for two years, and an immediate nine-month ban on academy signings. Rosenior assured the press that the sanctions would not distract from the team’s preparations: “It’s not a negative distraction. It’s a line drawn through that issue. (Now) we can plan to make this club as strong as possible,” the 41-year-old Englishman stated.
Belief Remains in the Camp
Despite facing a sizeable deficit, personnel issues, and off-field distractions, Rosenior insisted the squad retains belief ahead of the decisive European encounter. “I think this week was difficult for us. We know our strengths, we still believe because we showed in the Club World Cup when we won 3-0 (against PSG in the final). The group believe, the manager believes, the fans should believe as well,” he said.
