  • Simons has been ruled out for the remainder of the season as Tottenham battle relegation, and cannot participate in this summer’s World Cup
  • The Netherlands are set to open their 2026 World Cup campaign in Group F against Japan on 14 June

Knee Injury Ends Simons’ Campaign

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Xavi Simons has confirmed he will miss the rest of the current campaign and the upcoming World Cup due to a knee injury. Simons was stretchered off in the second half of Spurs’ 1-0 win at Wolves on Saturday, reportedly as a result of anterior cruciate ligament damage.

Incident Against Wolves and Emotional Reaction

The incident occurred after the 23-year-old collided with Wolves defender Hugo Bueno. Although Simons briefly returned to his feet, he soon collapsed to the turf again and required immediate medical attention. Taking to social media, Simons conveyed his devastation at the setback, stating: “They say life can be cruel and today it feels that way,” Simons wrote in a social media post.

“My season has come to an abrupt end and I’m just trying to process it. Honestly, I’m heartbroken. None of it makes sense.”

Massive Blow for Spurs’ Survival Fight

This injury presents another significant obstacle for Tottenham as they fight for Premier League survival. Sitting eighteenth in the table, Spurs trail safety by two points with only four fixtures remaining.

Netherlands’ World Cup Plans Disrupted

The Netherlands national side will also feel Simons’ loss ahead of the 2026 World Cup, set to begin in the United States, Canada, and Mexico on 11 June. The Dutch open their Group F fixtures against Japan on 14 June.

Simons added: “All I’ve wanted to do is fight for my team and now the ability to do that has been snatched away from me … along with the World Cup,” and continued, “Representing my country this summer … just gone. It’ll take time to find peace with this, but I’ll continue to be the best team-mate I can be. I have no doubt that together we’ll win this fight.

“I’ll walk this path now, guided by faith, with strength, with resilience, with belief, as I count down the days to getting back out there.

“Be patient with me.”
