Scott Parker Departs Burnley by Mutual Consent Following Relegation Blow

Former Burnley manager Scott Parker

Key Takeaways:

  • Scott Parker left Burnley by mutual agreement eight days after their relegation from the Premier League
  • Burnley secured just four wins from 34 league matches and collected only a single point in their past eight fixtures
  • Mike Jackson has been appointed as caretaker manager for the remaining four league games, beginning with Friday’s visit to Leeds United

Parker’s Exit Confirmed After Disappointing Campaign

Burnley have parted ways with head coach Scott Parker, confirming his departure by mutual consent only eight days after the club’s relegation from the Premier League. The decision comes after Burnley suffered a 1-0 defeat to Manchester City on 22 April, which sealed their demotion to the Championship for the second time in three years.

Recent Performance and Managerial Change

Burnley’s struggles throughout the 2024-25 Premier League season have been evident, as the side managed just four wins from their 34 fixtures and obtained a solitary point over their previous eight league games. In response to Parker’s departure, assistant coach Mike Jackson will assume responsibility for the squad for the final four matches of the season, commencing with Friday’s away fixture against Leeds United.

Poor Cup Runs Compound League Troubles

In addition to their league difficulties, Burnley’s campaign was further marred by disappointing cup exits. The team were eliminated early from both the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup, losing to League One opposition on each occasion – Mansfield ousted them from the FA Cup, while Cardiff were victorious in the Carabao Cup.

Parker’s Tenure at Burnley

Appointed in July 2024 on a three-year agreement, Parker led Burnley straight back to the Premier League by guiding the side to a second-placed finish in the Championship at the first time of asking. Reflecting on his spell in charge, Parker stated:

“It has been an immense privilege to lead this great club over the past two years,” said Parker.
“I have enjoyed every moment of our journey together, but feel that now is the right time for both parties to move in a different direction.
“I reflect back with great pride on what we achieved during my time at the club, especially our unforgettable promotion season in 2024-25, and it was a true honour to lead this team into the Premier League.”
