Decorated Stint with Benfica and Porto
Otamendi joins River Plate as a free agent, having opted not to extend his contract after six productive years with Benfica. The defender’s final appearance for the Portuguese giants came in a 3-1 victory against Estoril. Throughout his tenure at Estádio da Luz, Otamendi featured in 281 matches, netting 18 goals and providing eight assists. His achievements include a national championship, a League Cup, and two Super Cups. In addition, Otamendi previously represented FC Porto, collecting seven titles there, including three Portuguese league championships.
Focus Shifts to Argentina’s World Cup Campaign
Having resolved his club future, the 2022 World Cup-winning centre-back will now shift his attention to international duty, where he is tipped to play a pivotal role in Argentina’s defensive line-up as the Albiceleste prepare for the final phase of the 2026 World Cup.
