Real Madrid head coach Alvaro Arbeola

Key Takeaways:

  • Fulham confirmed the appointment of Alvaro Arbeloa as manager on a three-year contract
  • Marco Silva departed Fulham for Benfica despite previously expressing a preference to stay
  • Arbeloa completed 28 matches in charge of Real Madrid last season, finishing second in La Liga and reaching the Champions League quarter-finals

Arbeloa Appointed Following Silva’s Exit

Fulham have named Alvaro Arbeloa as the club’s new manager, handing the Spaniard a three-year contract in the aftermath of Marco Silva’s departure to Benfica. Arbeloa, aged 43, steps in after Silva decided to leave Craven Cottage following five successful years, having initially signalled his intent to remain.

Arbeloa, who previously represented Liverpool and West Ham during his playing days in the Premier League, most recently managed Real Madrid, overseeing the club’s final 28 fixtures last campaign after Xabi Alonso’s exit in January. During his stint, Real Madrid secured a second-place finish in La Liga and progressed to the quarter-final stage of the Champions League, where they were eliminated by Bayern Munich.

Leadership Endorsed by Real Madrid Figures

The decision to appoint Arbeloa was bolstered by glowing recommendations from recently re-elected Real Madrid president Florentino Perez and the Spanish side’s incoming manager, Jose Mourinho, under whom Arbeloa previously played at Santiago Bernabeu. Arbeloa departed Real Madrid at the end of last season and was succeeded by Mourinho, who himself left Benfica, prompting Silva to take the opportunity with the Portuguese club despite Fulham’s attempts to extend his stay.

Club Leadership Comments and Approach

Upon his appointment, Arbeloa said: “It is a real honour for me to be embarking on this new stage at Fulham FC, the oldest club in London. I feel a great sense of responsibility and I’m deeply grateful to Mr Khan and Tony Khan for the trust they have placed in me with Fulham in the Premier League.”

Chairman Shahid Khan expressed his confidence in Arbeloa, stating: “Alvaro is, by his own admission, very ambitious. He has spent quality time around the best players, clubs and methods in the game, experiences which will serve him well here at Fulham. Alvaro also has great interest in our academy set-up and believes in giving young players a chance. I loved hearing that from Alvaro, as well as his intent on playing attacking football.”

Managerial Search and Squad Plans

Prior to Arbeloa’s appointment, Fulham were linked with former Tottenham and Brentford boss Thomas Frank, while ex-Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna was considered too costly at £8m before including salary and staff expenses.

Arbeloa has played an active role in Real Madrid’s youth ranks, initially serving as youth coach before becoming interim first-team manager in January. Reports indicate he is keen to strengthen Fulham by signing attacking midfielder Franco Mastantuono, full-back Fran Garcia and forward Gonzalo Garcia.

Fulham’s New Era

Arbeloa brings significant experience from elite European football, both as a player and a coach. With a commitment to attacking style and the development of youth players, Fulham supporters will be eager to see how the club evolves under his leadership following a period of stability and growth under Silva.
