Key Takeaways:

  • Bournemouth have initiated talks with Benfica for 22-year-old Antonio Silva as they seek to replace Marcos Senesi

Defensive Reinforcements Eyed at Vitality Stadium

Bournemouth are working on a deal with Benfica to sign Portugal international Antonio Silva, following the departure of Marcos Senesi on a free transfer to Tottenham Hotspur. The Cherries have identified the 22-year-old centre-back as a suitable successor to Senesi, who played a central role in the team’s defence.

Negotiations on Hold During Benfica’s European Push

Efforts to secure Silva have been temporarily suspended, as Benfica have shifted focus towards their Europa League qualifying campaign. The Portuguese side are set to tackle St Gallen in Switzerland on 23 July, with the return leg scheduled for the following week in Lisbon, prompting the club to pause ongoing transfer discussions.

Silva’s International and Domestic Credentials

Since his breakthrough into Benfica’s senior squad in 2022, Silva has established himself as a first-team regular, gaining experience across major competitions, including the Champions League, Europa League, and Club World Cup. The defender has earned 20 caps for Portugal and was called up to the national squad for the 2022 World Cup and Euro 2024. However, Roberto Martinez opted not to include him among the selected players for this summer’s tournament.

Bournemouth’s Transfer Activity and Ambitions

If completed, the capture of Silva would represent Bournemouth’s second signing of the summer, following the arrival of striker Alvaro Rodriguez from Elche, a transfer valued at up to £25.7m. With Marco Rose newly appointed as manager, the Cherries are focused on consolidating their squad after sanctioning player sales totalling more than £200m last year. The club have made it clear they intend to fend off any approaches for key players Alex Scott, Rayan, and Junior Kroupi as they aim for stability in the forthcoming season.
