Algeria and Vladimir Petkovic Part Ways

Former Algeria head coach Vladimir Petkovic

Key Takeaways:

  • Algeria parted company with Vladimir Petkovic on Monday after their World Cup campaign ended in the last 32
  • The Bosnian coach extended his contract until 2028 shortly before the start of the tournament
  • Algeria will begin qualification for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations in September in Group I with Zambia, Togo, and Burundi

Coaching Departure After Brief Tenure

On Monday, the Algerian Football Federation announced the mutual termination of Vladimir Petkovic’s contract, ending his tenure as head coach of the national team. The decision follows Algeria’s elimination from the World Cup at the round of 32 stage, despite Petkovic having agreed, earlier this year, to prolong his contract until 2028.

The Bosnian manager took charge of Algeria in February 2024 and oversaw the squad during their World Cup campaign in North America. Just before the tournament commenced, Petkovic signed a contract extension, signalling an intent for long-term planning. However, his stint was brought to an abrupt end following the country’s early World Cup exit.

The Algerian Football Federation’s official statement read: “The Algerian Football Federation announce that their contractual relationship with the national team head coach, Mr. Vladimir Petkovic, and his coaching staff has officially come to an end today, on a mutual agreement between the two parties.”

World Cup Performance Under Petkovic

During the expanded 48-team World Cup held in North America, Algeria progressed to the round of 32. They advanced as one of the eight best third-placed teams in the tournament. However, their journey concluded with a 2-0 defeat to Switzerland, bringing an end to their hopes of further progression.

Upcoming Challenges in African Competition

Looking ahead, Algeria are set to embark on qualification for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, with Group I fixtures beginning in September. Their group opponents include Zambia, Togo, and Burundi, setting the stage for another key test for the national side following changes in management.
